Nigeria's Next Top Model

I don't know her name. Would have walked right past her if she hadn't motioned to me to take her picture - almost as if she was aware of a latent but powerful beauty that her status in life had blinded the rest of the world to but which an unbiased camera would be sure to capture. My mind was so preoccupied with principles of photography in fulfilling this little child's unexpected request, that I was completely taken aback a few minutes later by the piercing eyes full of hopes and dreams staring back at me through the display screen of my camera: 10.1 megapixels of sheer, unadulterated beauty. It made me wonder how many more will pass by her without a second look – just another beggar. It would take more than the paltry 20 Naira note I'd pressed into her tiny palms to bring this wonderful gem out of the hopeless obscurity life has trapped her in. A star waiting to shine, if only the sky wasn't so far away…

Wow, great lack of DOF, my sort of stuff. F1.8, you have lovely kit like this and you haven't been using it why?
Morenike Olagbaju: It's a cheap (but very effective) 50mm portrait lens. The disadvantage with it is that it's more or less a point and shoot as you can't zoom in or out (I had to come close to this girl's face to take the pic) and I'm still learning how to focus with this lens. Another things is that for some strange reason, some of the features (the AF, adjusting the shutterspeed, etc.) on my camera don't work properly when i'm using this lens (I wonder why?). So nowadays, i tend to use them only when there's enough light.

I think you should try and find her and do a Photo diary on her...or some kind of Photo documentary on her... you never know where that might lead.
Morenike Olagbaju: I can't figure out how i missed your comment. You've certainly given me an idea...

i agree with Jide Alakija, there are times when you come across an image and for whatever the reason , the atmosphere, the content, the beauty, the technical skill, you had wish it was yourself that took it! This photo encaptures all these qualities. Its really quite beautiful, i just want to steal her n give her a big cuddle!
